1-1/2 pounds hamburger meat
3 (16 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
1 medium onion, chopped
1 medium bell pepper, chopped
1 (16 ounce) can pinto beans, rinsed and drained
1 (16 ounce) can dark red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 (1.25 ounce) packet chili seasoning mix
4 tablespoons chili powder
2 cups water
In a large stockpot over medium-high heat, brown hamburger meat until no longer pink. Using a slotted spoon, remove meat from the pan. Reserve the drippings.
Add onion and bell pepper to the pot. Saute until tender and onions are translucent, about 7-10 minutes. Add the meat back in, stir in beans, chili mix, chili powder, and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover pot, and simmer for at least 1-1/2 hours.
Serve in bread bowls, if desired. Garnish with shredded cheese before serving.
Serves 6-8.
